Teaching
Prof. Bouffanais teaches in the Bachelor in Computer Science, the Bachelor in Computational Science (including the joint Bachelor in Computational Science and International Relations) and the Master in Computer Science programs of the Faculty of Science, University of Geneva, where he directs the Computer Science Department. His courses draw on the group’s research in complex systems, data science and optimization. Official descriptions, schedules and credits are published in the UNIGE course catalog.
Bachelor in Computer Science
- 13X011 – Data Mining
Instructor · 3rd year · Spring 2025–2026 [syllabus]
Fundamental concepts, techniques and applications of data mining: data preprocessing, frequent patterns and associations, classification, cluster analysis and outlier detection, with hands-on exercises and projects on real-world datasets.
Bachelor in Computational Science / Bachelor in Computational Science and International Relations
- 13X083 – Complex Systems III (Systèmes Complexes III, taught in French)
Instructor · 3rd year · Autumn 2025–2026 [syllabus]
Dynamical and stochastic processes on complex networks — random walks, diffusion and percolation, opinion, epidemic and synchronization dynamics — and how network topology shapes them, with hands-on simulations in Python/NetworkX.
Master in Computer Science
- 14X013 – Metaheuristics for Optimization
Instructor · Autumn 2024–2026 [syllabus]
An accessible introduction to metaheuristics: tabu search, simulated annealing and parallel tempering, ant colony and particle swarm optimization, evolutionary algorithms and genetic programming, the no-free-lunch theorem and performance analysis. - 14X015 – Modeling and Simulation of Natural Processes
Co-instructor · Spring 2025–2026
Summer Schools
- SDG Summer School 2026 – Scientific Diplomacy, Multilateralism and Global Challenges
Co-organizer & course co-director, jointly with the Université de Montréal · Geneva Summer Schools, SDG Solution Space, University of Geneva · 22 June – 3 July 2026
Student Projects
Bachelor and Master’s thesis projects on the group’s research themes are offered throughout the academic year to students of the University of Geneva. Interested students are welcome to get in touch with a short description of their interests and background.
